New hardware startups are attempting to convince us to buy new products that purportedly reduce distractions in our digital lives. These new products aim to keep us either present or focused by simply doing less than what our current devices do.

This style of marketing suggests the problem is solved through product design rather than personal responsibility. You can be focused without buying a new device. You can be more present and less distracted by making changes in how you use your devices, which is what you will have to do anyway if you choose to buy a new device, because you’re not going to just throw away your iPhone.

You’re not going to trick yourself. All the same problems will exist as long as you use your other devices the same way. If you want distraction-free computing, you gotta get rid of the distractions, not buy a new one.
