Higher Prices for Foreign Tourists in Japan

There’s been speculation for years now about how museums, theme parks, restaurants, and hotels will start charging more money to foreign tourists than Japanese nationals. And yet, I haven’t seen any of that actually happen.

Every time I’ve heard this, I’ve asked, “How are they going to know who is and isn’t a tourist?”

Without asking for ID, they won’t. Right now, you don’t get asked for your ID at these kinds of places. For example, did you know that for domestic air travel, no one has to show their IDs at the airport? Did you know that at hotels here, you don’t have to show your ID to check in?

The only way these places could raise prices only for foreign tourists is if they become comfortable with selectively asking for IDs. And I think everyone would rather avoid even the mildest confrontation.

Yet, the speculation persists despite no one addressing this. And my guess is that it’s not addressed because everyone knows you can’t do it without discrimination.
