On a lark, I decided to draw a menu for my neighborhood café, secretly hoping to solve some small problems I’ve observed when foreigners specifically place their orders. Halfway through, I asked the owner if we could do it for real, and she gave me the thumbs up. It really was just for fun, because I never get to do this kind of thing for work.
I made the drinks menu, the food menu, and a bunch of extras, including the beans list, staff only sign, WiFi info card, and citrus soda card.
Part of this project required some small icons to use as punctuation or bullets, like an egg, fish, leaf, cheese spread, citrus slice, liquid splash, coffee beans, bag, and cup.
In addition to TBUD Mincho (my go-to serif Japanese font), I used Ohno’s Forevs for nearly everything else, with Obviously for the WiFi information card and Kass for the staff only sign.
