I keep seeing people write “AI is not going away” in blogs, but I don’t understand how anyone could be so confident about an industry with a short history, that has done unfathomable damage, while also struggling to become profitable. No, not all new technology is like that. And new technology shouldn’t be like that.
It appears the technology industry as a whole has largely discarded the very concept of efficiency, especially energy efficiency. There’s shockingly little care or consideration to building new things that do not consume massive amounts of energy. The last thing we need is more inefficient systems. It would be nice to see the development of new technology that disallows itself to scale unless it can scale responsibly, in all senses of the word.
Technology’s whole thing is about advancement, doing things more efficiently than before, not less. At least, that’s what I thought it was about.
